Librarian
Kaohsiung American School is seeking a Librarian to support students and faculty across the Elementary, Middle, and High School divisions. The ideal candidate brings at least five years of experience in school libraries or information literacy instruction, relevant professional certification, and familiarity with the IB framework. The librarian will lead initiatives that promote research skills, digital and media literacy, and a love of reading, while collaborating closely with teachers to support inquiry-based learning. KAS values candidates who foster student growth, engage well with diverse teams, and support DEIJ principles. Child safeguarding training is required.
Duties and Responsibilities: Teaching & Learning
- Develop and support delivery of a vertically aligned PreK–12 library and information literacy program, including research skills, media literacy, digital citizenship, and ethical use of information.
- Guide students and faculty in the responsible and effective use of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, as part of digital and academic literacy.
- Foster a culture of reading and inquiry through book promotion, author visits, programming, and student-led initiatives.
- Support ES, MYP and DP students with research projects, the Personal Project, Extended Essay, and other inquiry-based learning experiences.
- Teach students to critically evaluate sources, identify misinformation and bias, and understand issues of intellectual property, copyright, and academic integrity.
- Collaborate with teachers to integrate research skills, media literacy, and authentic information use into unit planning and assessment design.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Serve as an instructional partner to faculty, supporting literacy development and inquiry-based pedagogy.
- Participate in curriculum development, ensuring alignment between library resources and program needs.
- Advocate for equity of access to information, diverse perspectives, and inclusive and multilingual literature.
- Forms relationships outside the school community, allowing for increased services and resources for our patrons.
- Develops library specific and school wide policies and procedures based on experiences and best practices.
Library & Resource Management
- Oversee the budgeting, acquisition, cataloging, circulation, and maintenance of library print and digital collections.
- Manage library spaces to ensure they are welcoming, engaging, and conducive to learning.
- Provide professional development and guidance for faculty in the use of library and information resources.
- Maintain and update digital tools and systems supporting the library program.
Kaohsiung American School (KAS) is a private, not-for-profit day school established in 1989 for the children of expatriate families in Kaohsiung. The school is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and offers the IB’s MYP and DP programmes. We receive annual grants and sponsorship from the US Department of State.
Kaohsiung American School moved into its beautiful, purpose-built campus buildings in 2015/2016. We are recognized as the premier international school in southern Taiwan. We currently enroll 780 students from 40+ countries, although most of our students share Taiwanese heritage and Mandarin as a first language. Every year, 65–85% of our students are full IB Diploma candidates, and almost all other students will take certificates in one or more subject areas. All our students are multilingual learners.
