Seeking an experienced IB/MYP Music Teacher to inspire middle/high school students. Must have expertise in teaching music theory, performance, and composition. IB training and collaborative mindset preferred.

Kaohsiung American School (KAS) is a private, not-for-profit day school established in 1989 for the children of expatriate families in Kaohsiung. KAS is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), and offers the IB’s MYP and DP programmes. We hold memberships in the East Asia Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS), AAIE, CIS, AISA and other regional and global school associations. Our modern campus includes certified LEED Gold and Silver facilities.

Kaohsiung American School moved into its beautiful, purpose-built campus buildings in 2015/2016. We are recognized as the premier international school in southern Taiwan. We currently enroll 770 students from 40+ countries, although most of our students share Taiwanese heritage and Mandarin as a first language. The High School enrolls 260+ students and includes 35+ full or part time faculty members. Every year, 65–85% of our students are full IB Diploma candidates, and almost all other students will take certificates in one or more subject areas. All our students are multilingual learners. 

MYP/DP Music Teacher

The MYP/DP High School Music Teacher is responsible for planning, delivering and assessing music education within the International Baccalaureate framework. An ideal candidate will have at least five years of teaching experience and a teaching license. KAS offers the MYP and DP programmes in the high school, so IB experience is also preferable. Our music program includes general music appreciation, choir, ensembles, and a string orchestra. There are a few brass, percussion and wind instruments included, based on student interests. Some middle school students participate in HS classes or the orchestra based on ability. 

We look for faculty members with a learning mindset, “can do” approach to teaching and learning, a sense of humor, and a desire to contribute to school improvement as a team player. Additionally, our team is seeking faculty who share a commitment to engaging in a diverse professional community that is growing in its DEIJ principles and practices. 

Preferred qualifications include:

  • A demonstrated ability to lead high levels of student learning.
  • An aptitude for building and maintaining positive relationships with students, colleagues and parents.
  • Experience leading an advisory class or involvement in pastoral care, with a focus on student well-being, mentorship and personal development.
  • Experience teaching string instruments, teaching choir, selecting repertoire and managing concerts and other performances.
  • Experience conducting an orchestra program.
  • Strong knowledge of music theory, history, and performance techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of string instruments, coupled with an interest in diverse musical instruments.
  • Recent IB MYP/DP training and current high school teaching certification.
  • Strong understanding and respect for a diversity of cultures and the needs of language learners.
  • Has life experiences that demonstrate, among other things, a growth mindset, versatility, adaptability and resilience.
  • Effective communication skills utilizing a variety of mediums and techniques.
